Custom builder Ron Jones first started using PEX plumbing systems nearly 10 years ago in radiant heat flooring systems, and now he says he doesn’t use anything else for domestic water needs. “Most projects we do are slab on grade, and because of soil conditions there can be significant problems with piping under slab. Even when [the pipe] is sleeved or has plastic covering on it, it’s possible that chlorides in the soil and other conditions can lead to holes in the piping,” Jones says. “We’ve determined we like to use PEX type tubing to provide water lines both sub- and above-grade.”

PEX plumbing systems like Rehau’s RAUPEX piping are made from medium or high-density cross-linked polyethylene, a material that is resistant to chemical interactions, has no associated taste or odor, and is flexible enough to curve around corners without fittings. The material is also heat- and freeze-resistant. RAUPEX will not pit or corrode, resists interior wall scaling and deposit buildup, and will expand to minimize pressure surges, the maker says. “From a technical standpoint, the PEX piping doesn’t chemically react with materials that may be in the water. It has a predictable quality of lifespan to it, and it doesn’t impart any taste or flavor to the water,” says Jones.
