NEST LABS This year, Nest released the second-generation update to the Nest Protect smoke alarm, which continues to combat undetected disasters. Bidding farewell to shrill alerts, the hybrid smoke and carbon monoxide detector issues a friendly “heads-up” warning that easily can be silenced with the wave of a hand or by smartphone. The new version adds a “split spectrum” sensor, which the company says detects smoke and fire sooner, and with fewer false alarms. www.nest.com
