JB Straubel, chief technical officer at Tesla, shares the history of massive transformation in the automobile industry in this video from the HIVE conference.
“Innovation is super un-fun,” Straubel said during the presentation. “It’s really, really difficult. It’s not trendy. Everyone is telling you that you are wrong.”
The few who take that risk and suffer through the trials of innovation are reshaping housing. And, that’s the discussion we are having with HIVE. Who is taking that leap to innovate?
With Tesla, the innovation was painful, but it was a HUGE success – resulting in one of the most sought after new product launches in history.
And, as Straubel points out in his presentation, available to download here, it’s not enough to just create a new product. It has to be institutionalized. It needs to make a difference at a level that disrupts processes, another difficult concept for housing.

Straubel talked about Tesla’s next initiative that also has the potential to radically change housing. As a tangent from it’s lithium-ion batteries, the company launched a Powerwall battery for homes that stores solar energy for home owners. The battery, also a HIVE 100 top innovator, has large potential to change the way builders think of resources for their home buyers, which has large implications for urban development as well.
