Coastal Maine, where I live, is rich in granite. Deer Isle, which lies just across Penobscot Bay from my home town, supplied the stone for the base of the Statue of Liberty. The quarries themselves, mostly idle now, are a picturesque feature of the landscape. But based on this amazing slideshow of Vermont’s marble and granite quarries, the Green Mountain State may have us licked in that department. –b.d.s.
