Seething Termite Colony Destroys New Orleans Home

Of course, termites aren’t an unusual pest, especially in wet southern states. But this infestation has to be one of the worst, not only in the sheer number of insects found but also because it was discovered only days after the owner closed on her home.

Work crews opened every wall and ceiling, exposing beams, rafters and studs so badly eaten that they crumbled at a touch. The bottom 12 inches of the wooden chimney supports had been eaten away from the foundation. The termites had eaten through all but two of the house’s bedrooms.

”It’s the worst case of Formosan termite damage I’ve seen,” architect Bill Hebeisen told the Times-Picayune. ”And there were still live termites in there, too. They were running around every place.”
